Senior Home Care FAQ

What is home care?

Home care allows seniors to age in the comfort of their own homes with the assistance of professional caregivers to help with daily tasks. This can include medication reminders, chores, bathing, dressing, meal preparation, and companionship.

What is the difference between home care and healthcare?

While home care and healthcare have similarities, they have key differences. Home care services are non-medical and center around companion care and assistance with daily activities. Home healthcare on the other hand involves medically-trained professionals and will need the consent of a doctor.

What is the difference between home care and a retirement home?

Home care assistance allows you or your loved ones to stay in the comfort of your home, however it does mean that care is not always 24/7. Nevertheless, it does mean they can stay somewhere familiar and avoid the disruption of moving. It also makes it easier for family members and other loved ones to come visit. A retirement home, or an assisted living facility is the traditional choice for seniors looking for more help. It can provide a community of people to lean on and avoid them feeling isolated. However, a retirement home isn’t a guarantee as many are often full, expensive, and can have a waitlist. The decision for which is the better solution is up to you and what you’re looking for.

Can I change the home care schedule?

In order to ensure we have a caregiver available, we recommend sticking to the original schedule. However, we know how quickly things can change. If you need to adjust your caregiver schedule, let us know ahead of time so that we can ensure a caregiver is available. If you need to shift or cancel one day because of an appointment or an event, simply let us and your caregiver know ahead of time. After all, we’re here to make life easier for you. We will do everything we can to make sure your caregiver schedule fits your needs.

Can I choose the caregiver?

We want to make sure that you have a caregiver who you’re not only comfortable with, but who has the skills needed to provide you with the best home care. That is why we conduct our free home care assessment to be able to determine the right caregiver for your needs. Of course, if you’ve availed of our home care services before and want the same caregiver, we will do our best but we can’t promise anything as they may not be available.

 Can I hire a caregiver part-time or full-time?

Yes. You may hire a caregiver for part-time granted it meets our minimum of six hours a day, four days a week. However, if your loved ones will benefit from more care, you may hire a caregiver full-time.

Can you provide services for patients with Alzheimer's, dementia, injuries, etc.?

Yes. Our caregivers are certified nursing assistance and are able to provide home care and companion care for a range of people including those with dementia and those recovering from the hospital. For a full list of our home care services, visit our services page here.

Are your home care services personalized?

Yes. We believe everyone is unique and home care is not a one size fits all solution. This is why we believe in conducting a home assessment first. This is essential to not only building the relationship with your family and the Golden Arches team, but in understanding the type and level of care needed for your loved one.
